Computational Design workflows are powerful and elegant so long as you stay in one self-contained system. But the moment you push a parametric workflow into actual production — CNC, robotics, 3D printing, laser welding — you're on your own. Bridging file formats, fighting legacy CAD, feeding ERP and PDM systems, writing custom interfaces, duct-taping together systems that were never meant to be connected.

And even when everything works, the tools stay locked to whoever built them. Colleagues can't touch your Grasshopper definitions without a steep learning curve, so the expert becomes the bottleneck. Rolling these workflows out via UIs and RhinoCompute sounds great — until you hit GDPR, IP protection, server setup and user management. More glue, more problems.

AI is changing what's possible in this pipeline — generative design for manufacturing constraints, synthetic training data for robotics workflows, automated code generation from design intent. But the moment you involve models, questions surface: how do you maintain design intent across the pipeline? How do you ensure your proprietary geometry, tolerances, and process parameters stay protected and aren't leaking into training sets or competing against you?

If this sounds familiar, you're probably alone or in a very small team. A misfit — an oddball, admired or more likely despised for their strange spaghetti tools. The knowledge stays siloed, the problems stay unsolved, everyone reinvents the same workarounds. Meanwhile, someone in a completely different industry has maybe already solved the problem you're stuck on. Why we’re here, and how the two days work. Grasshopper in small and big applications at Herding, the unglamorous glue in between and the preview of a beloved pet project: Snickelway — a Grasshopper plugin that turns parametric geometry into finished print jobs. It writes the 3MF, drives each manufacturer’s own slicer, and delivers the job to Bambu Lab, Prusa, or Formlabs printers without leaving the canvas.

03 · WHY A MISFIT

Julian Raabe builds the tools he needs. A computational designer, media theorist, and unrepentant bricoleur, he tinkers with processes and techniques until they bend to his purpose. Or at least he tries to.

He is responsible for Additive Manufacturing & Innovation at Herding Filtertechnik GmbH and teaches Grasshopper as a lecturer at OTH Amberg-Weiden. He is the initiator and organizer of Misfits of Manufacturing 2026, a symposium for his own kind — the people who wire parametric models into machines they were never meant to talk to.

From Automation Scripts to Distributed Design Systems

From Grasshopper to custom product configurators, from algorithms for spatial organization to automating design and fabrication. With the introduction of Wasp Atlas, this talk merges the experiences of our journeys on computational design within and beyond the Grasshopper canvas. We’ll reflect on how the role of design changes as workflows become software, why discrete systems and products require a different way of thinking than traditional parametrics, and how separating design logic from authoring environments enables reusable, shareable design systems. We conclude with a workflow from the AA Visiting School Seoul, where reclaimed urban materials were digitized, assembled with Wasp, and published through Wasp Atlas, a growing library of modular building systems.

03 · WHY A MISFIT

Andrea Rossi is a design technologist, founder of The Computational Hive, and creator of the open-source design tool Wasp. His work sits at the intersection of architecture, software development, digital fabrication, and material research, connecting academia and practice in novel ways. Why a misfit? Through open-source tools and discrete assembly systems, he approaches design and manufacturing not as fixed, optimized processes, but as open-ended spaces for experimentation and reconfiguration.

Roger Winkler is a creative technologist and developer of WaspJS. His work transitions between computational design as a freelancer and research data infrastructures at the University and State Library Darmstadt. Why a misfit? Initially trained as an architect, he operates outside the box rather than merely thinking outside it. Transitioning between design, code, and user experience, he is driven by exploring how the computational mindset can move beyond specialist environments and become accessible tools and systems for others.

BUILDING ROBUST DESIGN WORKFLOWS FOR 3D-PRINTED CONCRETE FORMWORK

We are developing 3D-printed concrete formwork and building software to support the design process. We first turned to Grasshopper for concrete staircase formwork because the manual modelling workflows were too complex and time-consuming. Even in Grasshopper, we quickly ran into limitations in robustness due to geometric tolerances. This led us to combine implicit and voxel-based geometry with Rhino’s surface and mesh representations, together with custom UI/UX tools. We will show how these techniques have been applied to both staircase and foundation formwork.

03 · WHY A MISFIT

Timo is a Grasshopper nerd who got into 3D printing. Philip is a 3D printing nerd who got into Grasshopper. We have not found any other commercial software that can do the workflows we needed, so we have joined forces and gone our own way — like true misfits.

On large projects architects & designers are often novated to contractors to coordinate design evolution but the average architectural project doesn’t have a budget to allow complex design & delivery team integration. I am a misfit of manufacturing as I communicate with my engineering, fabricating & contracting partners & create integrated supply chains allowing R&D as early as feasible in medium & small projects.

LOST IN TRANSLATION

From Digital Model to Physical Fabrication

02 · WHAT YOU’LL SEE

When a digital model leaves a BIM authoring tool and enters a manufacturing workflow, data gets lost, not because the tools are bad, but because the file was never designed to carry manufacturing information in the first place. This talk maps what that gap looks like from inside a live nuclear construction programme, where IFC (BIM) files built for coordination meet fabrication processes that need STEP AP242 (DfMA), and the two have nothing useful to say to each other by default. I will walk through the workflow breakdown that exposed this problem at scale, what it costs in time and data quality, and what changes when a purpose-built IFC-to-STEP pipeline is built around manufacturing information requirements rather than geometry export.

03 · WHY A MISFIT

I came to manufacturing from the wrong direction, through construction, BIM coordination, and a nuclear gigaproject, not through a factory floor or a production engineering degree. The problem I found wasn’t in the manufacturing process itself: it was in the moment before, the handoff, the file, the assumption that what leaves the model is what arrives at the machine. Whether that makes me a misfit or just someone who wandered in through the back door is something I’ll leave to the room.

Over the past fifteen years, INDEXLAB has investigated architecture as an experimental domain for advancing computational design and manufacturing processes beyond the constraints of conventional production. The talk will present a selection of research-driven workflows addressing non-standard fabrication, geometrically differentiated components, large-scale additive manufacturing, and adaptive robotic assembly. Through projects spanning computational design, robotic fabrication, machine vision, and human–robot collaboration, the presentation will examine the evolving relationship between design information, material behavior, and machine execution.

03 · WHY A MISFIT

Pierpaolo Ruttico is a researcher, engineer, and founder of INDEXLAB at Politecnico di Milano, where his work explores the intersection of computational design, digital fabrication, robotics, and architecture. Coming from architecture and construction rather than manufacturing itself, over the past fifteen years his research has challenged established production paradigms - adapting and reprogramming existing technologies, but also leading to the development of radically new machines and fabrication systems conceived around emerging design and construction needs. In this sense, he considers himself a “misfit of manufacturing”: an outsider who approaches manufacturing not as a fixed set of technologies and processes, but as a field that can itself be designed and continuously reinvented.

In subtractive manufacturing even if the APT format dates back to the 50s/60s, it still works remarkably well as a machine neutral format. On the other hand, the AM ecosystem is very g-code centric with no clear APT equivalent. Should we settle for a suboptimal g-code to native robot program workflow, or should we find a better alternative?

He has a software engineering background and in the last 4.5 years he has been fortunate to learn a lot more about screen to CNC and robotic fabrication workflows. Everyone wants to automate the repetitive stuff. But with design and geometric workflows that go to production, used by people across a wide range of skill levels, the “how” gets a lot harder: how to build it, how to reduce human errors, how to keep it accessible. This talk walks through a real workflow and why it ended up needing more than one tool.

Felix works where sheet metal fabrication meets design workflows, mostly trying to make the second one less painful for everyone involved. That pain has produced a fair number of tools over the years, some small, some not so small. Most of them exist because something kept going wrong and building something reusable and robust made more sense than hacking around it and hoping it would work.

We will demonstrate how Rhino and Grasshopper have helped us bridge the gap between design and production by integrating nearly the entire workflow into a single environment. Along the way, we’ll discuss both the successes and the obstacles that come with challenging traditional processes. We’ll share where we encountered limitations, both in our scripts and in ourselves. You’ll see what a Grasshopper definition with over 36,000 components looks like and learn how we managed to navigate the complexity without completely losing our minds.

We have been the misfits of manufacturing since 2022, when our Grasshopper team was established. Since then, we’ve been working to show that computation and automation can bring real value, even in the niche world of wooden playgrounds.

Rasmus, with KOMPAN since 2018, has driven the integration of Rhino and Grasshopper across the company and helped accelerate their adoption throughout the organization. Dominik, who joined KOMPAN in 2021, focuses on implementing automation in daily workflows, supporting end users, and delivering training. Both script on a daily basis to make design and engineering processes more efficient.

Scripting Kilometers of Highway Walls

This talk breaks down the direct pipeline we built to automate the fabrication of massive, kilometers-long noise-cancellation walls for one of the biggest concrete manufacturers in Europe. We will dive into the custom Grasshopper C# plugin and the cloud-based ShapeDiver user interface we used to successfully bypass the “expert bottleneck.” Expect a raw look at the automation of hundreds of detailed manufacturing PDFs, exported curves for laser-guided factory placement, comprehensive 3D data used to feed broader manufacturing systems, and the trusty master spreadsheet containing every single element needed to build the wall. Let’s unpack the exact files, spaghetti tools, and workarounds we used to bridge the gap between digital models and the factory floor.

Edwin Hernandez is a Senior Computational Designer and Project Manager at ShapeDiver, drawing on his background in architecture and computer animation to automate manufacturing in unexpected industries, from gravestones and golf clubs to elevators and stand-up paddleboards. A decade of global collaborations taught him that traditional 3D modeling was not enough, driving him to master C# programming and cloud-based tools to build highly optimized parametric pipelines. Today, he uses these tools to solve the industry’s “expert bottleneck”, streamlining complex manufacturing processes while actively sharing his expertise through teaching, webinars, and online tutorials.

From Computational Design to Fabrication-informed and performance-based 3D Printing Workflows

In this talk, I will present WASPer_3DP, a free Grasshopper framework I am developing for the design and fabrication of additively manufactured building components. The presentation will focus on workflow rather than product demonstration: how geometry generation, infill design, performance feedback, slicing, toolpath structuring, process simulation, and G-code/robotic fabrication can be connected inside Rhino/Grasshopper. I will show examples from the newest release, including study comparison tools, fabrication process simulation, texture-driven toolpath customization, and visualization workflows for clay/ceramic 3D printing. The goal is to discuss how design decisions can move closer to manufacturing constraints from the early stages of computational modeling.

03 · WHY A MISFIT

I am Juan Diego Vargas, a PhD researcher at Politecnico di Torino working on development of Design for Additive Manufacturing Methods (DfAM) for building components, currently developing part of this work in collaboration with ACTech Hub at Universidade do Minho. My research sits between computational design, façade systems, performance assessment, clay/ceramic 3D printing, slicing, and robotic fabrication, so I often find myself moving between disciplines that do not always speak the same language. I think that makes me a misfit of manufacturing: I am not only interested in making forms printable, but in building workflows where design, analysis, machine logic, and material behavior can inform each other.

The Joys & Terrors of Multiplayer Grasshopper

With NodePen, one of the promises of “Grasshopper on the web” is live, multiplayer scripting. So preoccupied with asking whether it could be done, it might have been better to ask if it should be done. But we have it now. In this talk, I take a quick survey of some of the good and some of the bad (but very funny) results of what happens when you let people work in Grasshopper together live. There were only a few casualties.

We started by building a browser-based parametric design tool, but manufacturers pushed us toward a bigger problem: connecting configuration directly to production. I’ll show a real workflow developed with one of our clients — from online product configuration and pricing to BOM, production geometry, and G-code — and how one customer request changed the direction of what we were building.

I’m Lernik Mirzakhanyan, co-founder and CPO of BeeGraphy. I came into manufacturing from software and entrepreneurship rather than traditional engineering. That outsider perspective led me to question why so many steps between customer choice and production still require manual work.

RHINO MEETS REALTIME

Installations and exhibits are built twice. Once as a fabrication model that produces the parts, and once as a separate realtime model for the software that has to run inside the finished object, rebuilt from scratch because the workflow in between usually breaks. This talk looks at that duplication from the perspective of someone whose work does not end at the machine: what has to survive from the design model into the running system, what gets lost, and where the two models can share a source. It also touches an open question rather than a solution, which is whether the realtime side can reach back into fabrication while it is still happening.

03 · WHY A MISFIT

Wolf Moritz Cramer builds computational design systems and custom software from Hamburg, for fabricators in steel, metal and facade construction as well as for artists and studios producing interactive objects. He trained as an architect, then spent years in realtime graphics before ending up in workshops, arguing less about tolerances than about processes. He is a misfit here because for most people in the room the job is done once the data reaches the machine, and for him that is roughly where it starts.
